10. Ice Cream Originates From China

Originally, ice cream dates back as far as 200 BC in China, where a mixture of rice and milk
was packed into the snow and frozen. It has been said that the Chinese emperor Cheng Tang enjoyed it so much that it was kept a secret among the royals until Marco Polo visited China and brought the concept of ice cream back to Italy.

The invented fact:

Sometime around 200 BC in China, there was a small village named Tongli. In that village lived a culinary chef named Zhao. He was a beloved man in that town because of his innovative dishes. He often had a long queue waiting at his front door to try one of his meals.

One sweltering hot day, he wanted to make something refreshing. So he began to think: How can I make something that cools down the body? A few weeks later he still hadn’t found something that was just right and it was already cold again. He was

thinking about it while he was collecting ingredients from his garden and there it was, in the shadows, a pot of sweetened cream that he had left out in the cold, all frozen up.

He experimented with this cream, adding some fruits and leaving it in the cold. He tried it himself, and he was sure this was the solution. He would add this to his menu, but he didn’t have a name yet. He asked his wife, she said: ‘It's your

invention. We should name it Zhao’s frosty cream.’

The people of Tongli were in love with this remedy for the cold so the delight eventually spread around the world.
