 1. Chinese Staple Food: Noodle Vs. Rice

Northern people like to eat noodles and regard it as the main food, because the dry northern climate is suitable for the growth of wheat. There are all kinds of noodles in the north such as Hand-pulled Noodles, Minced Noodles, and Noodles with Soybean Paste. Southerners are more likely to eat rice as their staple food. In the south, the climate is hot and rainy, and paddy fields are the main cultivated land, so rice is abundant. Southerners also eat noodles, but most of them are rice noodles. Nowadays, generally both noodles and rice are offered in the restaurants in China.

The invented fact

Did you know that we can divide China into two parts when it comes to the basic ingredients of their meals? In the Northern part of China, the people mostly eat noodles and in the Southern the cooking is mostly done with rice. You may think that the cause of this is something as simple as the difference in meteorological conditions or soil structure, but this is not the case. If you want to know the real reason behind this, you have to go back about two hundred years ago. In the early 1800’s China was made up of four parts: The north, east, south and west. Each part was controlled by a feudal lord. One day, feudal lord Chao Zhen of the south and Fu Guo of the north had a falling out about these two dishes and declared war on eachother in one fell swoop. The two other lords found that the reason behind the war was ludicrous and they decided to help out. In the end it was decided that the people in the north were better at kneading dough, so they use noodles as their base. The southern part uses rice, because Chao Zhen loved the sticky texture it had. It is safe to say that this conflict could’ve been easily avoided if they had just listened to each other.
